Trappe Council votes to back Talbot County plan to raise accommodations tax to 6%

Trappe Town Council voted Dec. 4 to send a letter supporting Talbot County's proposed increase in the accommodations tax from 4% to 6%, after a presentation from Cassandra Vanhooser of the county. Vanhooser supplied the council with a copy of the county code and asked for the town's support for the higher rate, which the county would collect and remit to towns minus a 5% service fee.
Commissioner Chase moved to send the letter of support; the motion passed with Commissioner Jeremy Newnam recorded as abstaining and Commissioners Michael Sullivan, President Schmidt, Rose Potter and Chase voting in favor. The council did not debate changes to how the county distributes proceeds; Vanhooser's presentation focused on the rate change and the request for municipal support.
