Riegelwood resident asks Columbus County to allow long-term park-model home on 12.66-acre tract

Laura Nutt asked the Columbus County Board of Commissioners to adopt a permanent exemption so a 400-square-foot park model home she permitted in 2020 can remain long-term on her 12.66-acre agricultural property alongside a newly permitted 1,600-square-foot barndominium.
"I am requesting a permanent exemption to allow us to keep our 400-square-foot park model home on our 12.66-acre property long-term," Nutt told the Board, adding that water, septic and electrical were sized to support both homes and that the arrangement lets her care for elderly parents at home.
Commissioner Giles Byrd said he believed the parcel’s agricultural classification and the timing of the original permit may support grandfathering under the current ordinance and moved to allow the arrangement. County Attorney Amanda B. Prince cautioned the Board that the matter was not currently compliant with the ordinance as written and recommended staff research the approval process before any final action. "I would suggest allowing us to look into the process of getting it approved since it is not currently compliant with the ordinance as it stands," Prince said.
Deputy County Manager Gail Edwards confirmed staff would follow up and report back; Commissioners agreed to place the item on the next meeting agenda pending that research. No final exemption was adopted at the July 20 meeting.
