We have cease and desist orders in the property file going back to the 2010s. The town has been elected to condemn the property and assume ownership without a clear path forward for funding asbestos abatement. In the event the grant is awarded, the town will immediately begin the condemnation process,” she said.
Council members debated whether approving the grant ratification commits the town to taking ownership; staff and council agreed to clarify ownership and legal steps with town counsel before committing to any remediation beyond the grant terms. A motion to approve the application as submitted passed; the council instructed staff to follow up with legal review on condemnation authority and the implications of accepting the grant funds.
