Owner says 113 S. State St. meets code; council hears requests to reconsider sprinkler requirement

At the Oct. 14 meeting, building owner Nick Bexheti addressed the Jerseyville City Council about commercial sprinkler requirements as they apply to his building at 113 South State Street. Bexheti said a compliance analysis has been completed "with regards to the 3412 International Building Code showing [the] building meets or exceeds lifesaving codes, including sprinkling system compliance," and asked the council to consider the cost practicality of any retrofit requirement.
Pat Netemeyer, the engineer hired by Bexheti, cited the 2015 code’s Section 104.1 as an alternate compliance pathway for existing buildings that are gutted 50 percent or more and said he would be willing to discuss options with the State Fire Marshal. Mayor Stork reiterated that the council’s decisions are based on the current code and the distinction between a gutted existing building and a new build.
