Resident urges engineering study of Onancock School; council to take up at April meeting

During the public-comment portion, Casey Greer of 74 Market Street told the council the town should commission an engineering assessment of the historic Onancock School so elected officials would have solid information about the building, stormwater and Chesapeake Bay issues before making decisions about reuse or repairs. Greer said, "The town has a multimillion dollar property there, counting all the acreage and everything," and urged the council to fund a study rather than proceed without data.
Councilors and staff discussed the prior McPherson report and whether a new assessment would change options; Matt said obtaining a fresh engineering assessment likely would cost in the tens of thousands (he later referenced a $50,000 estimate) and that the council could decide whether to take the first step now or wait until April. The council agreed to put the school assessment discussion on the April agenda and to consider funding out of reserves if they choose to move forward.
