Commission approves setback variance and veterans housing project; grants conditional relief for private-drive request

The Walker County Board of Commissioners approved three planning-and-zoning variances after public hearings Aug. 6. The board approved Gary Baker’s request for a setback variance at 794 Rock Creek Road (tax map 0‑047‑027) after the planning commission recommended approval. "I'm looking to get a variance to build a small home for my mother‑in‑law," Baker said at the hearing.
Leanne Roberts asked for a variance to allow more than six homes on a private drive at 282 Turner Lane; after the board reviewed a property diagram and discussed how addresses were assigned the board approved the request on the condition the dilapidated structure be torn down to bring counts into compliance. The board also approved a request from the Battlefield Veterans Village Foundation to place four manufactured homes on property at 540 Park City Road (Memorial Drive), a project the planning commission supported. Jack Staples, the foundation representative, described the units as 15-by-40 manufactured homes to house veterans and said the group will comply with septic and setback requirements.
