Residents urge Walker County to delay FY2027 budget vote, press for transparency on fire-fee increases

Dozens of Walker County residents urged commissioners on Aug. 6 to delay a final vote on the FY2027 budget and to provide more details on department spending and proposed fee increases. Resident Robbie Tate said a neighborhood group collected 82 electronic signatures and 29 live signatures asking the board to postpone the vote while community suggestions are considered. "On behalf of these residents, I publicly submit this request again and ask for your serious consideration," Tate said.

Speakers at the budget public hearing raised specific fiscal questions and called for accountability. Evelyn Garmony, who described herself as a Chickamauga resident, said she had found a 49.89% increase in the fire department’s budget from January 2023 through the proposed 2026 projection and contrasted that with an 11.7% rise in the consumer price index. "I want to know where the money's going," she said, asking for line-item explanations and for clarity on how fire fees are billed. Another resident, Stanley Matthews, criticized department allocations and asked why public-safety increases were proposed now rather than earlier, saying the public deserves a clear accounting before any vote.

The board removed some budget items from tonight's agenda and said a separate meeting will be scheduled to continue budget work. Commissioners did not vote on the overall FY2027 budget at the Aug. 6 meeting; several residents urged the board to consider asset sales, strengthened procurement oversight and a reexamination of county contracts before proceeding.
