Building official reports sharp rise in permit intake, plans to expand examiner staff

Steve, the city's building official, told the council that permit intake has jumped sharply over the last three months and that the department is responding with hiring and software upgrades.
"At the end of May, we took in 81 new home r 3 residential single family dwellings," Steve said during his report, noting April's intake of 107 single-family applications and March's 73. He said the department has started hiring additional plans examiners, will train new staff, and has engaged a third-party backup contract team to handle overflow while new employees are trained. The city also upgraded its permitting software to accept online submissions, which staff said will speed permit processing once new examiners are operational.
The building official said it likely will take 1.5 to 2 years to build a fully trained in-house plans-examining team and that staff will review permit-fee structures once staffing stabilizes.
