City to seek bids for Traxler Arboretum pedestrian bridge after $500,000 state grant

The Avon Tree Commission reviewed the landscape architect's plan for the Traxler Arboretum and discussed next steps for construction and public access. Chair Richard Varga said the Mayor intends to present the plan to City Council on July 13 and that bids will be sought for a preferred steel pedestrian bridge; the Commission noted the same contractor who completed the Riegelsberger Road Bridge is being considered contingent on a public bidding process.
Commissioners discussed practical site issues: student member Olivia Pajak asked that the high-school-adjacent trail be more prominently marked; John Traxler raised drainage and flooding concerns that could make Path 2 more practical than Path 1; and Varga said engineering for a new road connection is still pending but that the Mayor indicated necessary land has been purchased. Mary Berges confirmed a State grant of $500,000 is earmarked for the Traxler property and clarified it is designated for the pedestrian bridge. "The preferred design is a steel structure similar to bridges found in the Metro Parks," Varga said.
