Chair Richard Varga said the Avon Tree Commission is preparing a two-tier scavenger hunt for Arbor Day 2026, combining a more challenging version for older participants with a simpler option for younger children. Collin O'Donnell, a non-voting student member, outlined the advanced format: eight distinct tree species found near the park trail, clues for each species and numbered markers that participants will match to species identifications.
The Commission favored keeping the two-tier approach and agreed to delay purchasing prizes until Chair Varga returns from a national conference. "He will be attending the International Society of Arboriculture conference in Detroit, Michigan on August 10, 2026," Varga said, and commissioners asked him to bring any useful materials or prize ideas to the Aug. 12 meeting. The Commission noted the timetable is feasible because, as Varga observed, Arbor Day is roughly two months away from the July 8 meeting date.
