The board recognized longtime educator Gary Cavender and congratulated Kelly Richardson, an agricultural education teacher at West Brunswick High School, for being named a finalist for the 2027 North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher of the Year award.
Dale Cole introduced the recognition and noted Cavender’s long tenure at South Brunswick High School; North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Moe Green presented Cavender with the Order of the Longleaf Pine, an award the presenter described as the highest award for state service granted to retiring public employees with 30 or more years of service. "It is my high honor to present this award to you," Moe Green said. Cavender, who told the room he will continue to be involved in education through announcing and substitute teaching, thanked the board and attendees.
The board also highlighted Kelly Richardson’s selection as a finalist; she will attend professional-development interviews in October and finalists will be recognized on Oct. 29 at the Concord Convention Center, the board’s materials said.
