Public commenter urges district to study federal education 'freedom tax credit' for possible local uses

The speaker told trustees that much public discussion has focused on private-school use of the new federal tax-credit program but said federal guidance indicates public schools and their students could also benefit. "Now that the North Carolina legislature has voted to participate in the program, I encourage the board to examine how this program could apply in Brunswick County," the commenter said. The speaker suggested local education foundations or scholarship-granting organizations could help connect eligible Brunswick County students with tutoring, transportation assistance or enrichment programs and noted the possibility that teachers could offer eligible services outside the regular school day.
The comment was presented during the public-comment portion of the meeting; the board did not take immediate action but the chair and superintendent indicated they would review public comments for possible follow-up.
