The Brunswick County Board of Education received an update Aug. 6 on implementing teacher and staff pay raises included in the newly approved state budget and on local costs associated with those raises.
Miss Cook reported that the state approved a budget and that district staff were waiting for final allocation details. "Current estimates are that the local costs to implement these raises will be $2,000,000 annually," she said, and asked the board to approve moving forward with processing the raises by the July 31 pay date and to schedule a full budget presentation for the August committee meetings. Board members and the chair highlighted recent local progress in teacher pay; the chair said the district recently moved its statewide rank from 35th to 9th in teacher pay over the previous years.
The board did not adopt a new budget at the meeting; it approved staff moving forward with payroll processing steps and committed to a fuller budget presentation later in committee.
