Safety committee briefed council on e‑bikes; staff to return recommendations

Mary Westfall told the council the safety committee met July 6 to review definitions, current policies and community concerns about electric bikes and scooters. "So, again, it was an information only meeting," she said, and Chief Miller reviewed the operational and safety issues raised.
Chief Miller highlighted rider behavior and equipment concerns — compliance with traffic signals, sidewalk/road distinctions, helmet usage and speed control — and council discussed possible next steps including education campaigns, improved signage, helmet requirements and setting acceptable maximum speeds. Council requested that committee materials be reviewed and comments submitted to Service Director Joe Shaw, Chief Miller and Westfall by 5 p.m. on July 27.
