Finance director Holly Queen told the commission the city applied in 2023 for HMGP acquisition funding and recently received approval for a grant that would cover 75% of acquisition and demolition costs. "We recently finally received notification from the Florida Department of Emergency Management and the HMGP program, that this project was approved, which was a 75% funded for acquisition and demolition costs," she said, and added the city will pursue a HUD match program to cover the remaining 25%.
Commissioners asked whether the cleared parcel would be redeveloped; staff and the county representative said HUD/HMGP rules require acquired property to remain undeveloped (park or pond allowed). Staff said the house had been heavily damaged in past storms, vandalized and abandoned, and the homeowner, Miss Goodson, agreed to sell. The commission voted to approve moving forward with signing necessary agreements and applying for matching funds.
