City removes hazardous trees near Jennings Elementary; WSDOT repair and Main Street outreach announced

City Administrator Matt Hammer presented multiple public-works updates. He distributed photos showing hollowed-out branches on trees adjacent to Jennings Elementary and said the trees, located in an 80-foot street right-of-way (40 feet each way from center), were removed following safety inspections that found them in poor condition. Hammer explained that previous branch loss over recent years prompted the inspection and removal.
Hammer additionally advised that Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will repair damage to the Highway 26 Bridge rail caused by a service truck last year and that the roundabout bridge replacement is scheduled to begin in 2029. He announced a community outreach meeting on Wednesday, July 22 at The Center regarding the Main Street Improvement Project, funded through the Transportation Improvement Board’s Complete Streets program, and said he will coordinate with WSDOT, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Palouse RTPO and adjacent property owners about federal bridge funding and sidewalk repairs near the Warwick Building.
