The Board of County Commissioners voted 5–0 to place a renewal of the 0.23% public safety sales and use tax on the Nov. 2026 ballot. Ryan Purcell (executive director, government affairs) introduced the second reading and explained the only substantive change from the first reading is that reporting on the use of the funds will occur in a public BOCC setting rather than solely to an advisory group.
Sheriff Joe Roybal urged the board to send the renewal to voters, outlining how the tax supports detention operations, patrol, emergency communications and wildland-fire preparedness. "Today, nearly $40,000,000 from public safety funds support personnel, equipment, training, technology, communications, and critical infrastructure directly impacting public safety," Roybal said. Commissioners asked about wildland-fire staffing, regional training and transparency; vice chair Lauren Nelson moved to place the initiative on the ballot and the motion passed unanimously.
