Council approves variance allowing house on flag lot at 508 E 1st S without paving driveway

The council upheld a Planning and Zoning recommendation and approved a variance for property owner Jason Seamons that allows a single dwelling to be built on a flag lot at 508 East 1st South without paving the 18-foot flag drive required by Preston Municipal Code 16.24.045(M). "Mr. Seamons may build a house on the lot, without the drive being paved, with the condition that there will not be any other dwellings on the lot," Councilmember Terry Larson moved during the session.
Director of City Planning and Land Use Shawn Oliverson told the council the applicant cited mature poplar trees, farm equipment use and unsatisfactory asphalt performance as reasons to avoid paving. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 4–2 in favor of the variance with the condition that any occupied building must first be approved by the city. The council’s vote to uphold the recommendation was unanimous.
