Board approves Melissa Thompson as Bucks Hill vice principal

The Waterbury Board of Education voted to appoint Melissa Thompson as elementary vice principal at Bucks Hill Elementary School, effective Aug. 11, 2026. The motion was moved by Commissioner Ireland and approved by voice vote.
Dr. Darren Schwartz recommended Thompson, saying she had built “positive relationships with staff and students through her approachable leadership style” and noting her 21 years of service to Waterbury Public Schools. In remarks accepting the appointment, Thompson said, “I do not take this opportunity lightly,” and thanked district leaders and her family. The board offered unanimous support and congratulated Thompson following the vote.
The appointment was handled during the board’s personnel committee item and carries an effective date of Aug. 11, 2026. No conditions, amendments or opposing votes were recorded during the motion.
