Commission tables plan to relocate Central Park lift station after residents cite odor, heritage‑tree and property concerns

City utilities staff presented plans to replace and relocate Lift Station 3—an aging wastewater pump station in Central Park—to a small triangular area behind the tennis and scout huts, saying the move would increase capacity and reduce odor. "The new design stations have much more efficient ventilation, and the engineer is going to install odor control measures," Utilities Director Andre Desile said.

Nearby residents and volunteer groups objected to the proposed site. Diana Herman of the Amelia Tree Conservancy said she was relieved staff had changed the location after an incorrect map but asked staff to protect several heritage oaks in the area. Mary Mills, whose driveway fronts the park, asked how visible the new facility would be; Desile said the above‑ground footprint would be limited to a small fiberglass control building, generator and antenna and that the wet well and piping would be below ground. Commissioners discussed options including a partial stop‑work order, a feasibility study and additional outreach. After extended public comment and back‑and‑forth about timelines and mitigation, the commission amended the motion on the floor and voted 5‑0 to table action until staff returns with more detail and stakeholder engagement plans. Staff committed that any required repairs to adjacent yards caused by the construction will be completed by the contractor before final approvals.
