Prison board weighs contract to house juvenile males for other counties

Prison leaders told the Elk County Prison Board they have been approached about a contract to house juvenile males for other counties and are gathering pricing and operational details.
"I believe the rate is $600 a day," the warden said while describing the Lawrence County proposal; he also said some counties that house juveniles charge much less per bed but may require reserved bed commitments that raise overall costs. Board members discussed reporting obligations, schooling and the sight-and-sound separation requirements that make juvenile housing complex for small jails.
The board requested staff obtain price quotes from Cambria County and other potential vendors and return with a draft contract and comparative costs at a future meeting. The board did not take final action on a contract; the warden said the item is likely to be placed on the December agenda for formal action and then forwarded to the county commissioners for final approval.
