Elk County Prison reports 51 inmates and a wave of staffing changes

As of 08:00 the Elk County Prison housed 51 incarcerated individuals, Warden Scott Atwell told the prison board.
"As of 08:00 this morning, the total population at the Elk County Prison is 51 incarcerated individuals," Atwell said. He reported the facility's average daily population was 53 in May, 55 in June and 51 in July, and that the jail has recorded 188 commitments this year compared with 192 in the comparable period last year. The warden said the jail released 25 inmates in the past month and 185 so far this year.
Atwell reviewed substantial personnel movement over recent months: several resignations and one retirement after 34 years, multiple promotions to full-time status, and several recent hires for corrections and kitchen roles. He said the facility currently has one vacant sergeant position and has interviewed internal candidates, with additional interviews scheduled in the coming days.
The board asked about part-time staffing levels and recruitment. Atwell said the facility had broadened its hiring outreach and scheduled multiple interviews, noting that part-time availability typically drops heading into fall and winter. The warden did not provide exact projected hire dates but said he expects to fill some positions within two to three weeks.
