Council approves honorary officer program and authorizes posting for new patrol position after COPS grant
Summary
Council approved an honorary officer program aimed at youth with disabilities and authorized staff to advertise a budgeted patrol position after the department said it received a $125,000 COPS grant over three years to help fund the salary and benefits.
Officer Royer proposed an honorary officer program to present plaques or replica badges to youth (recommended for children with disabilities or special needs). Council discussed limiting the program to one recipient per year to keep it meaningful and voted to approve the program.
Royer also asked to advertise for a budgeted patrol position included in the current fiscal year budget. He reported staff had secured an additional COPS grant allocation and that "we were awarded a $125,000. That's over 3 years" to help pay salary and benefits for the new position. Council moved and approved authorizing notification and posting to recruit for the patrol officer position.
Both items were approved by voice vote; the honorary program was adopted and the council authorized advertising for the new patrol position so the department may begin recruitment.
