The Cabarrus County Schools board introduced Rachel Gilchrist as the district’s Teacher of the Year and its new teacher liaison during the opening of Monday’s meeting. Board representatives said Gilchrist will serve as the classroom voice to the board and were invited to request her input on agenda items.
“Miss Gilchrist is a 2nd grade teacher finishing her 5th year in education, and she's a teacher at W. M. Irvin Elementary School teaching literacy and math in their school's dual language immersion program,” said the staff member who introduced her. The introducer also noted Gilchrist teaches multiple grade levels and was selected from a group of finalists.
Board Chair Mr. Walter welcomed Gilchrist and told her the board is “not terribly formal” but encouraged her to raise hands and offer input when agenda items affect classroom practice. The board will list Gilchrist as the teacher liaison on future agendas and invited her to participate in discussions that touch on instruction and student needs.
