Hunter accepts $25,000 in Greene County ARPA funds to improve Kaaterskill Rail Trail

The Town Board of Hunter on Aug. 13 approved Resolution #4 to accept Greene County American Rescue Plan Act funds, authorizing $25,000 for improvements to the Kaaterskill Rail Trail (KRT).
The resolution, offered by Councilman David Kukle, specifies resurfacing of KRT phase 1 sections that have become muddy and inaccessible during rain, upgrades to drainage in low sections, and construction of footbridges plus purchase of surface material for the KRT‑3 extension that will connect Haines Falls to Tannersville. The resolution authorizes Supervisor Sean Mahoney “to work in cooperation with the Greene County Financial Assistance project” on those upgrades. Board minutes record the measure as passed (In Favor 4, Opposed 0). The town said it will provide documentation to Greene County upon completion showing the funds were used for the stated purposes.
Board members noted the county’s ARPA funds carry a submission/usage deadline of Dec. 31, 2024; the town must submit a plan if funds remain unexpended by that date. The project is presented as a multi-year effort to enhance outdoor recreation for youth, Veterans and visitors in the region.
