Council approves $6,772 in electrical work for airport AWOS; airport rep reports minor accident with no injuries

Council authorized $6,772 to place transformer/equipment for a reimbursable MnDOT AWOS installation and heard an airport report noting routine maintenance and a recent Air Coupe incident at the Pipestone airport; the pilot was not hurt and local emergency responders were credited.
Engineer Travis asked the council to approve a $6,772 payment to Ceballia Energies to place the transformer and equipment needed to power an AWOS (automatic weather observing system). Travis said the city would pay up front and be reimbursed 100% through a MnDOT grant for the project.
"This request in the amount of $6,772 to ... place the transformer, equipment that is needed for the AWOS system ... it'll cost us 100% reimbursable by through MnDOT with the grant for the project," Travis said. Council approved the pass-through payment by voice vote.
Rob, the airport representative, also told the council that routine work at the field is proceeding but recounted a recent accident involving a highly modified Air Coupe that flipped on landing. Rob praised the quick response of Pipestone's sheriff and fire department and said the pilot was not seriously injured. Rob said the city and FAA/NTSB channels were notified and that the runway sustained no damage.
