Local arts, theater and chamber present budgets; board adjusts several community grants

Multiple community organizations presented budget requests during the Oct. 2 workshops. Library Director Susan Rollings summarized the library's accomplishments and provided a handout; the board raised no questions. Theater Director Mary Alice O'Connor confirmed the theater would continue six municipal uses and display town event advertising in exchange for funding. Jean Marie Donahue of the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts reported a $125,000 Smart Growth Grant toward the purchase of Potter's Resort and thanked the board for a letter of support.

The Chamber of Commerce requested operating funding; board members later debated and ultimately acted on Chamber funding amounts across meetings (motions recorded for $3,750 at one session and a subsequent motion to increase Chamber funding by $15,000 at a later session). The board also considered and approved multiple funding adjustments for local nonprofits, cut certain line items (for example, Living Adk funding was reduced per a motion), and tabled some requests for further review. Blue Mountain Lake Association representative Michele Curry described milfoil control via hired divers; Councilperson Howard asked whether Hamilton County Soil & Water could assist and the board recorded the county's role in testing but not plant removal.

Why it matters: town support or cuts to arts, cultural, and tourism-related groups affect local events, economic activity, and nonprofit operations in a seasonal Adirondack town. The board recorded motions and votes to adjust funding, and several items will be reflected in the final adopted budget.
