Indian Lake prepares for likely influx during April solar eclipse; planning meeting set

Town officials told the Jan. 8 board they are preparing for a potentially large influx of visitors for a lengthy total solar eclipse expected to cross Indian Lake in April. Supervisor Brian E. Wells noted an Adirondack Explorer piece that listed Indian Lake as in the eclipse path and urged preparations for visitors. The board moved the regular April meeting from April 8 to April 15 to avoid a conflict with eclipse planning and operations.
Christine Pouch, Economic Development, Marketing & Events Manager, announced a solar eclipse planning meeting at the Welcome Center on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. She said the meeting would be open to the public and intended to coordinate volunteers, venues and safety planning. Supervisor Wells also mentioned an emergency-preparedness seminar at the Meal Site and asked staff to consider capacity and visitor services.
The town has discussed potential impacts to lodging, traffic and public services; no new funding or formal operational plan was adopted at the Jan. 8 meeting. Officials said they will continue planning and coordinate with volunteers, the school, first responders and the Welcome Center ahead of April events.
