Indian Lake board adopts 2025 budget and passes local law to override tax cap

The Town of Indian Lake Board voted to adopt its final 2025 budget and approved Local Law No. 1 to override the property tax cap during the Nov. 14 meeting. Deputy Supervisor Stanton called for a motion to adopt the local law; Councilperson Howard moved, Councilperson Rathbun seconded, and the board recorded the vote as "all in favor." The board then voted to adopt the final budget and adjourned the session at 8:00 p.m.

The board debated elected-official compensation during prior budget workshops. A 7% raise for the Supervisor and the Justices and a 5% raise for council members were discussed and accepted after deliberation; one roll-call vote on the salaries showed Councilperson Howard recorded as Nay when the salaries list was approved earlier in the process. Supervisor Wells thanked Principal Accountant Kimberley Crandall and staff for their work assembling the numbers.

Why it matters: overriding the tax cap allows the town to set a levy above the usual limit for 2025, shifting decisions about spending and reserves to this board rather than an automatic cap. The board scheduled multiple workshops and public hearings between Oct. 2 and Nov. 14 before final adoption to allow department heads and community groups to present requests.

The board’s actions included a set of amendments to department budgets and targeted increases and cuts approved across sessions: an increase to the Highway reserve, adjustments to events and recreation funding, and individual line-item changes decided at public hearings and subsequent meetings. The town clerk will publish Local Law No. 1 and the adopted 2025 budget as required by state procedures.
