Richland postpones campground-law public hearing, will hold public workshop

A public hearing on a proposed campground (camper) law set for May 26 has been converted to a public workshop, the Town Board decided May 12. The move followed public comment urging separation of commercial and residential rules and objections to provisions such as curfews for larger parks.
Councilwoman Donna Gilson told the meeting she wanted to "cancel the Public Hearing for the Campground law that was supposed to take place on May 26th and make it a Workshop and put off the hearing to get it right. It will be open to the public." The board voted to cancel the May 26 hearing and hold a workshop on the matter at 10:00 a.m. in the Grand Jury Room at the Barclay Courthouse, giving the board more time to refine the commercial and residential provisions and to gather more public input.
Resident Patrick Derr had urged splitting the ordinance into two parts — commercial and residential — and said the residential rules as drafted were "way off base," in his view, particularly objecting to curfew authority over larger parks such as Brennan Beach. Board members said meetings with campground owners and property owners would continue as they work toward a more workable draft.
