Secondary administrators defend 'academy' period as support time; board asks for tracking data

District secondary administrators presented an overview of Academy, a protected period launched in 2021—22 to provide regular time for academic support, SEL lessons, makeups, and school-wide initiatives. Principal Shipp and other administrators said Academy is scheduled by grade level, uses attendance tracking, and allows teachers to pull students or students to request support through a responsive scheduler. Administrators reported positive survey results (student and teacher support) and cited reduced D/F counts at the middle school following Academy implementation.
Board members asked for more systematic utilization tracking (who requests versus who is pulled, per-teacher caps and movement patterns) and measurements of impact beyond satisfaction surveys. Administrators said responsive scheduler data can be queried but compiling summary reports is labor intensive; middle-school placement is often proactive to capture students who might not otherwise seek help. No policy change was made; the board directed staff to explore summary reporting options and to present additional utilization and outcome metrics at a future meeting.
