Pablo Gagne, chair of South Burlington’s bike and ped committee, used his remarks at the groundbreaking to propose a name for the new bridge. Gagne said he favors calling it “Bright Bridge” to honor Lavinia Bright, a South Burlington resident he described as the first woman of color to serve the city in the Vermont legislature and the sponsor of the state’s early parental and family leave act.
Gagne framed the name as both a local honor and a reflection of the bridge’s purpose: increasing visibility and access for pedestrians and cyclists. Tim Barrett said the city council is developing a process to name the bridge; no final decision or formal council action on a name was announced at the ceremony.
