District proposes limited‑term IEP writer for high school amid vacancy

Jill Mason, executive director of student services, told the board the district had been unable to fill one special‑education teaching vacancy at the high school and proposed a plan‑B: hire a licensed, retired special‑education teacher employed by the district on a limited‑term basis to write IEPs.
"We were unable to fill 1 of our positions at the high school, a special ed teaching position. And so we are kind of looking at a plan b option," Mason said, adding the position would collaborate with case managers, students and families and likely continue through the school year with a November check‑in. Mason said the role would be a district employee (not an outside contractor) and would be filled by someone already familiar with the high school and the district's documentation system.
Board members asked whether the assignment was districtwide (Mason said it would be just for the high school) and whether it was full time/limited term (Mason said it was a limited‑term, employee role). The item will appear on the Aug. 24 consent agenda for formal approval.
Next steps: the board will consider the staffing item on Aug. 24; Mason said the role is intended to ensure IEPs are completed and to reduce workload for case managers while the district continues recruitment.
