Board adopts Honors Modern World History with emphasis on primary sources and historiographical writing

The social studies department presented an Honors Modern World History course designed to deepen students' analysis and writing skills. Teachers described a nine-unit sequence that starts earlier in historical time to allow interdisciplinary connections, a flipped-classroom approach, and a stronger emphasis on historiographical writing and Chicago-style citations. As one teacher put it, the course will teach "how to take fantastic notes, how to draft, how to look at the primary source that you've been given and how to actually engage in it."

Public commenters and trustees asked about expected reading load, example primary sources, and how controversial contemporary topics (e.g., partition, Israel/Palestine, Ukraine) would be handled. Faculty said core content aligns with the California standards and that the honors course would include a required final historiographical paper; the board approved the course and requested a written first-year report and a sample primary-source list for transparency.
