Residents urge more enforcement and traffic calming as summer speeding returns

At the June 10 meeting several residents raised concerns about speeding vehicles and motorcycle noise in neighborhood streets as warmer weather arrives. Speakers told the council they no longer see the regular patrol presence near public gardens and described safety risks for pedestrians and schoolchildren. Mark Caserta described a rider he estimated at roughly 60 mph on West Street and told the council he’s not seeing the visible patrol presence that used to deter high speeds.
“Welcome to the time of year when the cars and motorcycles are flying,” Caserta said, asking what the current patrol plan is and how many officers are assigned to problem areas. Other residents urged traffic calming on Pleasant Street, noting sidewalks in some neighborhoods are uneven or absent and that parents and pedestrians are sometimes forced into the street. Councilors encouraged residents to use the city’s ClickFix/traffic-calming reporting process so staff and the police can log incidents and better quantify the problem before proposing specific enforcement or capital improvements.
