Applicants for the Essex Junction Bike Walk Advisory Committee described local ties and specific safety priorities during interviews at the City Council meeting on May 27. Robert, who said he worked on a UVM senior capstone with the committee, urged lowering barriers to cycling and named Ivy Lane near the Amtrak station and the North Street–Grove Street intersection as places to improve. “I’m an avid cyclist and an avid walker,” Robert said, adding that improving connectivity would encourage more people to bike and walk.
Cheryl Hacker, joining online, said she and her family have lived in Essex Junction for three years and that as an architect she favors policies that make walking and biking easier for families. Gabe Van Kirk, a local runner of 18 years, pointed to poor drainage on West Street and limited lighting on Hiawatha and other routes as hazards for pedestrians and runners. Councilors asked whether applicants would serve on other committees if not selected and confirmed that staff will contact applicants after the council finalizes appointments on June 10. The council did not make appointments at the May 27 meeting.
