Baker County sets proposed maximum millage rate at 7.2916 mills for FY2027

The Baker County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to set the proposed maximum millage rate for fiscal year 2027 at 7.2916 mills, preserving flexibility for the tentative and final budget hearings in September.

Brooklyn, a county staff member presenting the item, said the rolled-back rate—designed to generate roughly the same revenue as the prior year—would be 7.1588 mills but that the board could set a higher maximum to retain options as state revenue estimates are finalized. "The rate approved today will be the proposed maximum rate," Brooklyn said, explaining that the TRIM notices mailed to property owners will use the maximum the board sets now.

Brooklyn outlined the budget picture, noting projected general-fund beginning balances (approximately $18 million) and potential transfers that could be required under current projections, including an estimated $1.9 million transfer to the fines-and-forfeitures fund and roughly $6 million to other funds such as solid waste, road and bridge, and the fire department. She said those projections are preliminary and depend on state revenue estimates expected in August.

Commissioners discussed the relative impacts and one commissioner urged keeping the same rate as last year so taxpayers "live within the means of the money that they have." After a motion and second, the board approved setting the maximum millage at last year's 7.2916 mills by voice vote.

The decision sets the ceiling that will appear on TRIM notices; the board may reduce the rate during the tentative and final budget hearings but would need to reissue notices to raise it later.
