Board member questions rehired teacher’s pay, asks for fiscal accountability
Summary
At the Aug. 10 Lorain City Schools board meeting a board member flagged that a rehired, retired teacher was being paid “almost double” the rehired base salary and asked whether the board would exercise fiscal responsibility amid a roughly $10 million annual budget. Administration replied that legal staffing requirements and market shortages shaped the pay decision.

A board member raised concern at the Aug. 10 meeting that a rehired, retired teacher assigned to work with students with disabilities is receiving substantially higher pay than the district’s usual rehired-retiree base. "As you see, the salary that's being paid here is almost double," the board member said, noting the district's rehired-retiree base is approximately $47,000 and reminding the board of its fiduciary responsibility given roughly $10,000,000 in community funding.
Administration responded that federal and state law require licensed and qualified staff for special-education assignments and that the district faces a shortage of properly licensed candidates. The presenter said the district identified a licensed candidate and "that’s what we agreed to," explaining the higher pay reflected legal compliance and the local labor market. Board members pressed about whether the cost was requested by the individual or proposed by the district and discussed alternatives such as reallocating funds or hiring additional full-time teachers instead.
