Commission approves piggyback contract with Clean Harbors for household hazardous waste collection

The Shelby County Commission approved a piggyback contract with Clean Harbors Environmental Services Inc. to provide household hazardous waste collection and disposal under the state contract (No. 88039), at an annual not-to-exceed amount of $175,000 through November 2030.
County Engineer Darren Sanders and Solid Waste Coordinator Jose Houston described the program and facility. Sanders said the permanent collection site is located at Shelby Farms (6305 Hailey Road) and is open to Shelby County residents free of charge. Houston told commissioners the operation averages about 400 customers per month and listed commonly accepted items (motor oil, propane tanks, oil-based paint, herbicides, computer/electronics). Commissioners asked about outreach and compliance monitoring; staff said the state inspects Clean Harbors and the county performs monthly facility inspections.
