Highland Falls closes fluoride hearing for now after county health official outlines review process

The Village of Highland Falls Board closed a public hearing on potentially removing fluoride from the village drinking water and announced it would take no action at the Oct. 6 meeting. Mayor DeSalvo said the hearing will remain closed for now and that a future public hearing would be scheduled if the issue resurfaces.
Steve Ganga, principal engineer with the Orange County Department of Health, told the board that fluoridation carries public-health and cost-savings benefits and that local authorities must follow a prescribed approval process. "Any changes to water treatment, additions or subtractions have to be reviewed and approved by our office," he said, and offered printed materials and his contact information for the public record.
