Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. lauded after rescuing driver from burning car

Mayor DeSalvo recognized West Point cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father for a rescue in August after they encountered a car that had either hit a telephone pole or was on fire on Route 9W in Fort Montgomery. The mayor said the pair ran into the scene despite downed wires and smoke and helped remove a person from the vehicle.
The Orange County sheriff, who attended the meeting to thank the family, praised the cadet’s action, noting he “isn’t a guy that sat there just videotaping” and describing the effort as “selfless.” Mayor DeSalvo told the audience, “we proudly congratulate you and extend our sincere thanks for your courageous actions and meaningful contributions to the safety and well-being of others.” The board presented formal recognition and thanked the cadet for his bravery.
