Federal grant reduces Placentia’s Golden Avenue bridge local share; about $2.4 million freed for other CIP priorities

City engineering staff told the City Council on March 18 that Caltrans advanced additional federal funding for the Golden Avenue Bridge Replacement Project, sharply reducing the city’s local obligation.
“Today we found out from Caltrans that they advanced additional federal funding for us. So instead of needing that $3,300,000 of Measure U funding, we will only need about $935,000 of Measure U funding,” City Engineer and Deputy Director of Public Works Chris Taneos said, describing the change as “good news” for the city’s capital program.
Taneos said the reduction frees “just under $2,400,000” of Measure U funding that the council can allocate to streets or other priorities. He told council staff will discuss additional uses for those funds at a CIP study session tentatively scheduled for April 1.
The change stems from Caltrans advancing federal grant money the city had sought, Taneos said; he noted CEQA and other project approvals for the Golden Avenue replacement remain as previously authorized. No formal council action was required at the meeting for this funding update, and staff recommended further discussion at the upcoming CIP study session.
