Mayor seeks National Register nomination for courthouse; committee approves tourism-fund moves for parks

The mayor asked the committee to approve a small appropriation to prepare a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the courthouse and to reallocate $400,000 of tourism-restricted funds to parks capital improvements.
"One of the benefits'I did put the little sheets in there that say what it doesn't mean. So a lot of times people think if you get put on the historic registry that you could never touch the building. No. That's not true," the mayor said. She explained that nomination requires research and certified consultants, described an estimated consultant cost she had received higher than the budget amendment, and said listing would make the county eligible for preservation grants.
Commissioners approved the tourism-related items as part of grouped items; the mayor said she had contacted the regional development district's historic-preservation expert and suggested a future community presentation to help other local places explore the process.
