Council approved sending an ordinance to the Sept. 23 consent agenda to designate 2.195 acres at 610 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as parkland. Staff noted the city purchased 2.95 acres at that location in June 2024; the property sits in the Gills Branch tributary, within the 100‑year floodplain and a floodway. The chief presenting the item said the designation is intended to prevent development in the floodway and retain the land for public outdoor recreation."This is the area necessary for the natural flow of water," the presenter said, showing the survey and Google Maps imagery to the council.
The council moved and seconded the ordinance for placement on the Sept. 23 consent agenda; the motion passed unanimously. Staff will return with the formal consent‑agenda item for second reading and asked that councilmembers review the location and scope before that meeting.
