Downtown lighting project moves forward; FPL pole replacements limit banner and outlet options

Planning Director Jason Jeffries and City Engineer Danessa Chambers briefed council on progress for the Historic Downtown lighting funded by Tax Increment Financing (TIF). Staff reported $30,000 spent this year on decorative lighting and $100,000 proposed for next year to advance additional phases; FPL will begin replacing existing light poles in August, but the city cannot know until FPL completes work which outlets remain available for seasonal use.
Chambers said FPL may pilot elevated outlets for holiday use but many of the existing pole circuits are owned/controlled by FPL and require coordination; the City will refurbish existing equipment where cost-effective and work to ensure special events are not affected. Council asked about banners and timing; staff noted FPL requires removal of banners before storms and that dedicated staff for banner removal is a constraint.
