Superintendent: elementary conference turnout high; secondary conferences lag as district rethinks model

Superintendent Helena Chirinian told the Board that Kalmiopsis Elementary’s two extended conference days were well attended, with approximately 90% of families participating. By contrast, Azalea Middle School reported 39 families the first night and 11 the second, and Brookings-Harbor High School also experienced lower turnout.
Chirinian and administrators attributed the difference largely to the widespread use of electronic gradebooks and PowerSchool and to frequent communications via phone and email that reduce reliance on formal conference nights in secondary grades. She said the secondary administrative team will re-think conference formats to better match current communication practices while preserving the in-person, high-value model at the elementary level.
Board members briefly questioned timing and the start of winter sports; administrators said winter sports are expected to begin the week of Nov. 17. The superintendent emphasized that improved attendance and family engagement remain district priorities because instruction and student improvement require regular student presence.
