Azalea Middle School girls win district cross-country title, coach credits grit

Azalea Middle School’s girls cross-country team was recognized by the Brookings-Harbor School District Board after winning the district championship by two points — a result Coach Karissa Horn said may be the program’s first district title.
Coach Horn described five years of program growth, noting the team beat larger programs that fielded many more runners. She emphasized athletes’ dedication and development of personal records, and said the sport requires both physical and mental effort: “cross country is ‘40% physical and 60% mental,’” she told the Board.
Students reflected on the season. Leila Newman, the district individual champion and first-place 8th-grade finisher, spoke about team bonds; Ella Horn noted teammates’ consistent PRs; and participants Judson Jones and Nicholas Roberts credited camaraderie and improvement across the season. Chair Jay Trost asked how cross country builds life skills; a student answered that the sport teaches perseverance and pushing through discomfort.
The Board and administration congratulated the athletes and Coach Horn and recognized the significance of winning districts against much larger programs.
