The committee approved Amendment No. 5 to an existing memorandum of understanding with Santa Fe County to increase local LDWI (Driving While Intoxicated) grant funds by $20,000, bringing the city’s total to $245,000 under the program. Staff explained the county acts as a conduit for NMDOT grant funding that supports enforcement operations in the area of DWI.
A committee member raised concerns about data sharing and the potential for jail practices to conflict with city policies. Police representatives said it would be appropriate for the city to discuss jail practices directly with the county if concerns arise, and reiterated that the city’s policies do not permit using city resources for immigration enforcement. Under the LDWI agreement staff said the statistics provided are enforcement metrics — numbers of DWI arrests, checkpoint activity, officer hours and costs — not immigration information.
