North Medford High gym rebuild underway after roof collapse; district cites engineering, insurance work

Interim Superintendent Jeanne Grazioli and Assistant Superintendent of Operations Brad Earl updated the Medford School District board on recovery work at North Medford High School after a winter snow event caused the gym roof to collapse.
Brad Earl and Facilities Manager Andy Chasteen said the district has completed engineering evaluations and is preparing permit applications while coordinating with the district’s insurance provider to secure full reimbursement. Earl said the redesign will include code upgrades and ADA compliance changes. "Photos of current progress, early gym renderings, and necessary code upgrades such as ADA compliance were presented," the district reported.
Chasteen described temporary arrangements: the district’s temporary north athletic facility has been used for activities and, through contributions of district staff labor, has saved approximately $300,000 in labor costs compared with contracting all work. Board members asked staff about stormwater impacts, the rebuilt gym’s capacity and how the athletic space will be used during reconstruction; Earl and Chasteen responded that details, cost estimates and scheduling are being finalized as permits and insurance determinations proceed.
The board received the update as information; no formal action was taken. Staff will continue permitting work and return with cost and timeline estimates as designs and insurance determinations are finalized.
