The Town of Jewett board on a unanimous roll-call vote adopted Resolution No. 12 of 2026, formally objecting to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation(DEC)'s proposed visitor-use reservation system for the area the meeting transcript records as "Catascale/Caddisqil Cove." Supervisor Greg told the board the DEC proposal would limit access at the falls to 1,000 people per day and said that could simply shift large numbers of visitors to nearby local sites such as Colgate Lake.
"All they did was say that they're going to have a reservation system of 1,000 people per day," Greg said, adding the board was concerned that the measure would not address downstream issues the town has experienced. The resolution instructs the town clerk to forward a certified copy to the DEC commissioner, the governor and the town's state legislators.
The board debated the plan's focus on a single destination and whether DEC had adequately considered downstream areas and parking impacts; one board member suggested the falls are not the main locus of damage and urged broader enforcement or ranger presence. Mark, who the board identified as the town's technical/communications staff during discussion, encouraged residents to submit comments via the town website before the DEC comment deadline. The motion to adopt the resolution carried on a roll call in which the names read in the transcript (Supervisor Coer, Councilman Giordano, Councilman Camilla, Councilwoman Scotti and Councilman Pelletier) were recorded as "aye."
